Practical Approaches to Dealing with Nonnormal and Categorical Variables Definitions and Distinctions

چکیده
Definitions and Distinctions First, it is important to distinguish between categorical variables and continuous variables. Categorical variables are those with two values (i.e., binary, dichotomous) or those with a few ordered categories. Examples might include gender, dead vs. alive, audited vs. not audited, or variables with few response options like “never,” “sometimes,” or “always.” Continuous variables are variables measured on a ratio or interval scale, such as temperature, height, or income in dollars.

متن کاملDefining Neighborhood, Analysis of Two Different Approaches: Expert-oriented Approach of Theorists and Perceptual Approach of Residents
The different offered definitions of “Neighborhood Unit” in various approaches and viewpoints by different specialized views, on the one hand; and excessive attention to expert-oriented and reduced viewpoints as well as neglecting residents’ perception of the neighborhood on the other hand necessitate providing a complete and exact definition of neighborhood which can cover all approaches a...
متن کاملTown trip forecasting based on data mining techniques
In this paper, a data mining approach is proposed for duration prediction of the town trips (travel time) in New York City. In this regard, at first, two novel approaches, including a mathematical and a statistical approach, are proposed for grouping categorical variables with a huge number of levels. The proposed approaches work based on the cost matrix generated by repetitive post-hoc tests f...
متن کاملThe Heinemann-Mittermeir Generalized Shape Factor and Its Practical Relevance
Fifty years ago Warren and Root have introduced the shape factor. This fundamental parameter for modeling of naturally fractured reservoirs has been discussed stormily ever since. Different definitions for shape factor have been suggested which all of them are heuristically based. Recently, Heinemann and Mittermeir mathematically derived - based on the dual-continuum theorem assuming pseudo-ste...
متن کاملData Mining in Incomplete Numerical and Categorical Data Sets: A Neuro Fuzzy Approach
There are many applications dealing with incomplete data sets that take different approaches to making imputations for missing values. Most tackle the problem for numerical input variables in the data set. However, when there are two types of input variables, numerical and categorical, the state of the art has provided no clear solutions. This paper presents a proposal for handling incomplete n...
